Phil McCracken, Gus and Other Comedy Characters

In the past five years I have created about a dozen comedy characters, with some such as Phil McCracken and Gus becoming fairly popular on YouTube. The other characters I do (to a lesser extent) incude Art Gallery, RC the Redneck Canadian, Alfredo Demento and a man who had a sex change operation and is now called Lorena. In all of these videos, I think of a basic idea for the video and then just wing it (ad lib) and hope and pray for the best.

From the thousands of comments I have received over the years, a lot of people think these people are for real (which is a scary thought) and Phil even has his own Facebook account here. Add him as a friend!

Below I will try my best to explain each character along with one of the videos they appear in. I'll add to this page slowly but surely as I become new characters.

PHIL MCCRACKEN (the harmless psycho)

Without a doubt my most popular, misunderstood, loved, feared and hated character. Phil is like Peter Pan and will never grow up, living at home with his alcoholic mother and attempting to show off his unknowingly bad attempts at guitar playing, rapping, beatboxing, excercising and anything else he thinks he is good at. He has now appeared in over 100 of my videos. Along with "Gus" I find him the easiest character to play, and also the most fun.

Although he acts "gay" he is too much of a loner to ever have a real relationship with anyone. He also seems to have a few mental issues, as in a lot of his videos he will break into a deadpan look for a minute or so until he comes back to reality. In his first video "Best Guitarist" (which you can see on the left side panel) the character was not yet fully formed, and you will notice his voice is much lower.

Phil always starts his videos with "Hi guys, this is Phil McCracken" and almost always ends his videos by doing the "devil horns" with his fingers (which he always struggles to do) and saying "Remember to rock on!".

GUS (the know-it-all)

Gus is one of my oldest characters and actually started out many years ago as a know-it-all writer with very bad grammar on my original humor site gravetimes.com. (For instance he wrote a biography on the Beatles but got them mixed up with the Monkees...)

Gus loves to insult his viewers and thinks he is much better than most people. His most famous saying is "you suck goatballs" but even after insulting people he always ends his videos with the very heartwarming "Your friend, Gus". He also has an uncle who used to be his aunt, which might or might not be another character I play (Lorena) Between Phil and Gus, I think I would rather have Phil as a friend, because Gus would stab you in the back with a big smile on his face.

ART GALLERY (the terrible artist)

Art Gallery has created some of the finest artwork known to mankind, at least in his own mind. Art is actually the worst artist in the world, but since no one has told him this fact, he thinks he's one of the best. When I first created this character I asked my wife Deb what wig I should use and she grabbed one with huge hair, which reminded her of the popular PBS series with Bob Ross (although she never mentioned this to me at the time.)

I was never actually thinking of Bob Ross while doing this character, so it was sort of an accident that I was impersonating him in a way (not that he is a bad artist...) After a handful of paintings in which he mentioned his artwork was for sale on eBay I was told by a couple of friends that I really should sell his artwork on eBay.

In the last video with Art Gallery I had the painting up for bids on eBay and I ended up selling the painting for over $120. Needless to say, Art will be selling more paintings (and also working with clay) in the near future.

LANCE BUNGHOLE (toilet expert)

Lance Bunghole is one of my newer characters and has made three or four videos so far. His expertise is problems with your toilet, although recently he opened up a burger joint as a side business. I would do this character more often but he takes a bit more work to get together but he is definetly fun to play and there will be more Lance videos in the
near future.

LORENA (sex change gone wrong)

Lorena is a woman that had a sex change operation with only partial success. In fact her sultry (?) voice will occasionally slip back into her former manly voice. I've only played this woman in a handful of videos as getting makeup applied by my wife is not one of my favorite things to do, but people seem to get a kick out of this character, so I will certianly do a few more videos with her in the near future. Also, I have promised my YouTube subscribers if I reach 50,000 subscribers on my channel before the end of 2010, I will act as Lorena when the pizza delivery man comes to the door. I will tell him I just had a sex change operation and try to make it as uncomfortable for him as possible. This will all be videotaped for my YouTube channel, if I reach my goal, that is...

ALFREDO DEMENTO (a real ladies man)

Alfredo is a real lady's man (and maybe a guy's man too...) and thinks he is the sexiest and most romantic man in the world, although women can't stand him. This is my wife's favorite character and when I did a video for classmates in a training class, they also loved him the most. I guess I should do more Alfredo videos... Below is a video in which he interviews my wife about her artwork.
