My name is Larry Graves, although on the Internet I am better
known
as the "Canadian Studmuffin." My main following is on YouTube, with
over 20,000 subscribers and 7.3 million total video views.
I was born in North Bay, Ontario Canada on February 28th, 1958. One of
my first memories (besides being beaten up by my two older brothers)
was seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in February of 1964.
Since that time, music (more than comedy) has been the main influence
in my life for being creative.
Around this time also I imagined hosting my very own variety
show, in which I was the host, which I had named "The Mark Singingsong
Show."
While other children were outside playing with toys and running around,
I was usually entertaining myself in front of my Mom's mirror
pretending to entertain people. (I never said I was normal...)
I was told by my Mom that I was named after a local popular
radio disc jockey with the first name Larry. I guess even my
mother knew I would love the field of entertainment...
I think the first time I realized that I might have a gift for humor
was when everyone in my Grade 4 class had to write a short story and
read it to the class. My story involved a kid getting bubble gum as his
Christmas present. The whole class erupted in laughter as I told the
story. I quickly became the "class clown", although I really did not
like the attention, as I was and still am a shy, quiet person, but I
sure loved to hear my classmates laughing. (Earlier this year I
temporarily worked at a call center. At the end of the six weeks of
training I had put together a ten minute comedy video with my various
characters talking about the call center. The whole class erupted into
laughter throughout the video, and it sure brought back memories from
the past once more...)
The years went by and I lost my way in school and became a bit of a
recluse, with only a couple of close friends. My love of music helped
me through the teenage years (and the music that influenced me can be
read on my Favorite
Rock
Albums page.) I started to be creative in my teenage years by
writing poetry, which surpisingly was never humorous, but serious.
(Check out some of my poetry elsewhere on this site.) In my early
twenties I finally found my way in
life, got married and had two sons.
Around 1993 I slowly started to write a bit and before I knew it I had
a small collection of humorous stories, which I printed up as
newsletters called "Grave Times". I handed these newsletters to family
and friends and luckily never got sued. I remember once my boss
at the factory I was working at came out of his office after reading
one of the newsletters and said to me "What are you doing working
here?", and that sure got me thinking. Maybe I actually had some
talent after all, but I rarely had any confidence to go with the talent.
When the Internet came into our lives (around 1997), I made up this
website, which has now been online for over twelve years. It started
out
as gravetimes.com but became canadianstudmuffin.com in the last year.
It was neglected for a few years, as I took a big interest in creating
comedy videos, but I am slowly bringing back most of my humorous
stories back online, but also adding more things to it, such as the
many stories I have had on coincidences in my life.
I did a comedy cd with Eric Myers called "Redneck Canadian", which you
can listen to here.
I
also
have
a
newer
comedy
CD
with
Russ
Krauch
called
"I'm
Not
Crazy"
and
you
can
listen
to
the
songs
here.
One of my proudest moments was working with Brian Ray on a video for a
song from his solo album. Brian just happens to be the guitarist for a
guy named Paul McCartney. You can see the video on Brian's channel here.
Going back a few years again, our family was shocked when we learned
that my first wife Nancy had cancer. She got the news in June of 2003
and she passed away (at the age of 40) in January of 2004. There is a
tribute page to her on this site here.
I am now remarried and my beautiful wife Deb's website with her amazing
artwork can be found at Debzart
Online She has always been very supportive of my creativity.
I have also received thousands of kind comments for my stories, videos
and songs throughout the years and I thank everyone for that. Of
course, there are always "haters" to ruin everything, but I have
learned to just laugh them off, ignore them or even write back to them
and say "Thanks. Have a super dooper day!" It's a great way to kill the
negativity...
I graduated from a two year Advertising course at a local college in
June of 2009.
